The onion cells shown above were covered in a sucrose solution, this caused them to undergo plasmolysis and become flaccid. This is shown in the pictures by the membrane of the onion cells pulling away from the cell walls, this occurs because there is more water inside the cell than outside so the water moves out the cell down a concentration gradient through osmosis. The cells therefore lose their turgidity and the plant will wilt.
